The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man, Isiyaku Usman, over the alleged defilement of a seven-year-old girl and theft of her two mobile phones in Darazo Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday.
According to Habib, the incident occurred on September 6, 2026, after the victim’s father, a 37-year-old resident of Kari village, reported the matter to the police.
He said the suspect allegedly lured the girl into an uncompleted building while she was on her way to a neighbouring house and subsequently subjected her to sexual assault before taking two Android phones she was carrying.
“On the same date at about 0800hrs, the victim was on her way to a neighbouring house with two Android phones of the same make, Techno A31, when one Isiyaku Usman ‘m’, 20 years old, of the same address, lured her into a nearby uncompleted building, robbed her of the phones and forcefully had sexual intercourse with her,” Habib stated.
The PPRO said detectives moved to investigate the complaint and arrested the suspect, who was allegedly found in possession of the stolen phones.
He added that the victim and the suspect were taken to Darazo General Hospital for medical examination, while their statements were obtained as part of the investigation.
According to Habib, the suspect made a statement to the police admitting to the alleged offences and remains in custody as investigation continues.
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the incident and directed that the case be transferred to the Gender Laboratory of the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
Habib said the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.
The commissioner reiterated the command’s commitment to combating sexual and gender-based violence and urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant about the safety and whereabouts of their children.
He assured residents that the command would pursue the case in accordance with the law and ensure that justice was served.
