Britain’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), has issued a travel advisory, warning citizens to avoid several regions of Nigeria, including the border with Niger Republic, amid anticipated nationwide protests.
The FCDO provides guidance for British nationals regarding the risks of international travel, helping them make informed decisions.
In the advisory published on the UK government’s website, the FCDO cited the upcoming #EndBadGovt nationwide protests set to begin in Nigeria on August 1, 2024, which are already gaining traction.
The latest FCDO update stated, “New information as of July 26 indicates that widespread public demonstrations are likely across Nigeria,” and urged British citizens to thoroughly research their destinations before traveling.
The FCDO identified specific states across five of Nigeria’s six regions where the protests might pose risks. It recommended avoiding these areas and cautioned that “your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against FCDO advice.”
It advised against all but essential travel to “Abia State, non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers and Akwa Ibom States, as well as Anambra State and Imo State.”
Additionally, the FCDO cautioned against travel to the Nigeria-Niger Republic border, which “has been closed by Nigerian authorities in response to the political situation in Niger.”
Citizens planning to cross the Nigeria-Niger border by land are advised to consult local authorities in both countries for the latest information before proceeding.
