Rivers NSCDC Gets New Commandant

Fidelia Soriwei, Abuja

The Rivers State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has appointed Commandant Reuben Dennis as its new head following the retirement of his predecessor, Commandant Joachin Okafor.

Dennis officially assumed office on Tuesday during a brief handover ceremony held at the command headquarters in Port Harcourt, where the outgoing commandant transferred authority through the symbolic presentation of the NSCDC flag and other official handover documents.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the command’s spokesperson, Ihemnacho Umeado, Dennis was until his appointment the Deputy Commandant in charge of the Rivers State Command and most recently served as Head of Operations at Zone 9, Port Harcourt.

In his remarks, the new state commandant pledged to build on the achievements of his predecessor while strengthening collaboration with other security agencies and key stakeholders across the state.

He also vowed to intensify the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure, warning criminal elements involved in economic sabotage and vandalism that the command would take decisive action against offenders.

Dennis further promised to prioritise intelligence gathering, personnel training and welfare, stressing that discipline would remain a core focus of his administration.

He warned officers and men of the command against misconduct, stating that disciplinary measures would be taken against any personnel found wanting.

The new commandant also called on residents to support security agencies with useful information, noting that ensuring public safety requires collective effort.

Earlier, the outgoing commandant, Okafor, expressed gratitude to the NSCDC Commandant-General, Ahmed Abubakar Audi, for the opportunity to serve the corps and the country.

He also acknowledged the support of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, particularly the donation of 10 Hilux patrol vehicles, which he said significantly enhanced the command’s operational capacity.

After highlighting some of the achievements recorded during his tenure, Okafor urged his successor to prioritise the acquisition of a permanent site for the state command.

Dennis, in turn, thanked President Bola Tinubu and the NSCDC leadership for entrusting him with the new responsibility, pledging to work towards a safer and more secure Rivers State.

The ceremony featured the signing of handover notes, the symbolic transfer of authority and a photo session attended by officers of the command.
