Security Tightens at Lagos Assembly Amid Obasa-Meranda Leadership Battle

By Joy Yesufu

Security was heightened at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday as police officers and other security officials screened journalists and visitors ahead of the plenary session.

Reports indicate that up to three police vehicles were stationed at the assembly’s main gate, with additional security vehicles positioned within the complex.

Journalists were lined up at the second gate where security officials demanded identification cards, barring entry to those who could not provide proper identity cards.

The tightened measures follow recent events involving a leadership crisis at the assembly. Over the weekend, ousted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa declared he remains the Speaker until due process is followed to remove him.

This has fueled tensions, with lawmakers reportedly distancing themselves from Obasa.

Obasa was removed as Speaker on January 13, 2025, after being accused of misconduct and financial misappropriation.

The majority of lawmakers voted to replace him with his former deputy, Mojisola Meranda. However, Obasa has denied all allegations against him and demanded proof.

Speaking to supporters at the Speaker’s Lodge in Ikeja GRA on Saturday, Obasa maintained his position: “If you want to claim that I’m corrupt, please prove it, let us see it,” he said.

The weekend also saw lawmakers gathering for a group photo within the assembly complex, notably without Obasa in attendance, signaling their support for the new leadership.
