Seven Akwa Ibom Reps Dump PDP, YPP for APC

By Joy Yesufu

In a major political shift, seven members of the House of Representatives from Akwa Ibom State on Thursday defected from the opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The lawmakers, who were elected on the platforms of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Young Progressives Party (YPP), formally announced their defection in separate letters addressed to the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas.

Those who crossed over to the APC include Unyime Idem, Martin Esin, Paul Ekpo, Uduak Alphonsos, Eteh Ikpong, Emmanuel Udom, and Okon Bassey.

The mass defection comes on the heels of Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno’s recent switch from the PDP to the APC, signaling a significant realignment in the state’s political landscape.

While the reasons for the lawmakers’ decision are yet to be officially disclosed, the development is expected to have far-reaching implications ahead of the 2027 general elections.
