Soludo formally Sacks Obi of Onitsha, Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council.

••• Appoints Igwe Obosi as Replacement

By Kamsi Anayo, Awka

Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra state, has in a surprise move officially removed Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, as Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council.

Achebe’s replacement is Igwe Chidubem Iweka, a renowned author and Traditional Ruler of Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area.

Reacting, Igwe Achebe has

congratulated Eze Iweka III, on his new appointment by the governor as Chairman of Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council.

“As Mr Governor told me, your  appointment was based on extensive consultation, which becomes your mandate to lead the TRC on a solid foundation . As your predecessor, I offer my full support and encouragement to you always in your capacity as  chairman.

“I was unavailably absent at today’s meeting due to a clash with a prior commitment in Lagos, of which Mr Governor was aware. I wish you very well,” Obi of Onitsha said in a statement on Sunday.

Soludo announced the change on Saturday at the International Convention Centre Awka, during the launch of the “Operation Udo Ga-Chi” security initiative.

According to the governor, Iweka’s appointment aligns with the newly amended State Traditional Rulers law.

This development follows a long-standing feud between Soludo and Achebe, who criticized the governor’s handling of traditional matters.

Achebe had berated the state governor for suspending Damian Ezeani, the traditional ruler of Neni community, over a chieftaincy title conferred on late Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah.

The Obi of Onitsha accused the state government of disrespecting traditional rulers and violating their rights, describing the government’s actions as the “apogee of the progressive dehumanisation and dismantling of the traditional institution” under Soludo’s administration.
