Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was reportedly taken to a hospital on Friday after collapsing during a Democracy Day protest in Abuja.
The incident occurred at the Unity Fountain, Abuja. where protesters had gathered to demonstrate over security and governance concerns.
Eyewitnesses said the protest turned chaotic when police operatives moved to disperse the crowd and fired tear gas canisters at demonstrators.
According to witnesses, Sowore, who was among those leading the protest, appeared to be affected by the fumes and collapsed shortly afterwards.
“He collapsed shortly after the teargas was fired. People around him quickly rushed to help him before he was taken away for medical attention,” a source at the scene said.
Videos circulating online showed protesters fleeing the area amid the confrontation, while others engaged security personnel as tensions escalated.
Sowore was subsequently taken to an undisclosed medical facility for examination and treatment. His condition was not immediately confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
The protest was organised amid growing public concern over recent security incidents across the country.
Authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident at the time of this report.
