President Bola Tinubu on Friday confirmed that eight suspects were arrested and several others were killed during a security operation that led to the rescue of pupils and teachers abducted in Orire, Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
The victims regained their freedom on July 10, bringing to an end a 56-day ordeal that began when they were kidnapped on May 15.
According to sources familiar with the operation, personnel from the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Department of State Services, the Nigerian Army, the Police and other security agencies were involved in the rescue effort.
Reacting to the development, Tinubu praised the security agencies for their role in securing the release of the captives.
“I am profoundly happy that our security forces successfully rescued the abducted pupils and teachers from Orire, Ogbomoso in Oyo State today after a military, police and intelligence-driven operation that neutralised some of the terrorists that perpetrated the evil act and the arrest of eight of them,” the president said in a statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.
“On behalf of the country, I express my gratitude to the officers and men of our armed forces, the intelligence agencies, and the police,” he added.
While welcoming the safe return of the victims, the president acknowledged the distress experienced by the pupils, teachers and their families during the period of captivity.
“My government will get justice for these children and their teachers and for the family of Mr Oyedokun, who the terrorists gruesomely murdered,” he said.
Tinubu also commended the Oyo State Government for its cooperation with the Federal Government throughout the crisis.
“I must commend the government of Oyo State for working cooperatively with us in bringing this unfortunate incident to a successful end,” the president said.
He further directed emergency response agencies to work with the Oyo State Government to provide medical care and other necessary support for the rescued pupils and teachers.
