President Bola Tinubu has expressed sadness over the death of veteran Nollywood actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, describing him as one of the most influential figures in Nigeria’s creative industry.
Jacobs died at the age of 84, with his death announced on Wednesday by his son, Olusoji Jacobs.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President paid tribute to the late actor, whose career spanned theatre, television and film both in Nigeria and internationally.
Tinubu said Jacobs played a significant role in the growth and professionalisation of Nigeria’s entertainment industry and inspired generations of actors and filmmakers through his dedication, talent and discipline.
The President also praised the veteran actor’s performances, noting that he brought “depth, dignity, and authenticity” to the characters he portrayed throughout his distinguished career.
“He was a giant of the Nigerian creative industry. His passing is a great loss to Nigeria, the African film industry and the global community of lovers of the performing arts. His remarkable body of work will continue to speak to generations yet unborn.
“The nation recognises the enormous contributions of Nigeria’s creative practitioners to the country’s cultural identity, global image and economic development. Olu Jacobs played a big role in creating this identity,” Tinubu said.
According to the Presidency, Jacobs received formal training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London before building a successful career in British television and international film productions.
He later returned to Nigeria and became one of the defining figures of Nollywood, earning widespread recognition for his contributions to film, theatre and acting development.
Over the course of his career, Jacobs received several prestigious awards and honours, including the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic.
The President extended condolences to the late actor’s family, especially his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, their children, relatives, colleagues in the film industry and members of the wider creative community.
Tinubu also prayed for the peaceful repose of Jacobs’ soul, describing his legacy as one that would continue to inspire future generations within and beyond Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
