UEFA has strongly criticised FIFA’s decision to overturn the automatic suspension imposed on United States striker,  Folarin Balogun, ahead of the country’s World Cup round-of-16 clash against Belgium, describing the move as unprecedented and harmful to the integrity of the competition.

The controversy erupted after FIFA lifted the one-match ban handed to Balogun following his red card during the USA’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In a sharply worded statement, UEFA accused world football’s governing body of undermining established disciplinary rules.

“Yesterday’s decision to suspend for a probationary period of a year the implementation of the one-match automatic suspension following the red card issued to the player Folarin Balogun crossed a red line,” UEFA said.

The European body added, “When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians, the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined.”

Belgium’s football federation also expressed surprise at the decision and has lodged an appeal, arguing that it has not been provided with detailed reasons for the reversal.

Belgium coach Rudi Garcia reportedly likened the development to an April Fools’ Day prank.

According to reports, FIFA cited Article 27 of its disciplinary code, which allows its judicial committee to fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary sanction.

However, the governing body has yet to publicly explain the basis for applying the provision in Balogun’s case.

The dispute has attracted reactions from political and sports officials across Europe. Belgium’s Foreign Minister, Maxime Prévot, questioned the circumstances surrounding the decision, while European Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport, Glen Micallef, stressed that sporting matters should remain within the jurisdiction of football authorities.

“Decisions on sporting rules and sporting matters belong to sporting ‌bodies, not politicians,” Micallef said. “Influencing sporting decisions would undermine the autonomy of sport.”

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s spokesman also emphasised the importance of preserving the integrity of sporting competitions, saying such decisions should remain the responsibility of football governing bodies.

Meanwhile, USA coach Mauricio Pochettino welcomed FIFA’s ruling, maintaining that Balogun’s dismissal by Brazilian referee Raphael Claus was unjustified.

“Everyone that really loves the sport and trusts ethics and integrity, I think we celebrate all that decision,” Pochettino said. “We were punished enough against Bosnia Herzegovina to play with 10 men for 30 minutes [because of] a decision that was completely unfair … 99.9% of people agree there was an unfair red card.”

The outcome of Belgium’s appeal is still being awaited, with FIFA’s handling of the matter continuing to draw scrutiny as the World Cup knockout stage progresses.
