Social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has criticised the Nigerian legal profession, declaring that law is no longer a noble profession in the country.
VeryDarkMan made the remark on Friday in a post on his social media handle while responding to criticism over his invitation to the Nigerian Bar Association’s 66th Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The activist was invited to participate in a panel session on insecurity at the conference, where he shared his experiences and views on the security challenges confronting Nigerians.
His appearance at the event, however, attracted criticism from some members of the legal profession, who questioned the decision to invite him to participate in the conference.
Responding to his critics, VeryDarkMan said he attended the conference to speak on behalf of poor Nigerians and people who, according to him, lacked a voice.
He also questioned why his presence among lawyers had generated controversy.
Turning his criticism to the legal profession, the activist rejected the description of law as a noble profession, arguing that recent developments had, in his view, undermined that reputation.
“I spoke on behalf of the poor people. I spoke on behalf of the people that don’t have a voice. Because a son of nobody was seen in your midst.
“This bunch of clowns are telling me that law is a noble profession. Well, lately, law has not been a noble profession. I’m sorry to say. I’m not even sorry to say. It is what it is,” he said.
His comments come amid an ongoing debate over the participation of non-lawyers and social media personalities in professional and public policy discussions involving the legal community.
