Political parties, candidates, security agencies and other stakeholders have signed a Peace Accord, to ensure violence-free campaigns and respect for the rule of law ahead of the 2027 general elections in Benue State.
The accord was signed at the Benue State Police Command Headquarters in Makurdi, Thursday.
Speaking at the event, Benue State Commissioner of Police(CP), Cletus Nwadiogbu, warned political parties and their candidates in the state to avoid recruiting thugs and cult members during campaigns.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the State Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, and made available to newsmen in Makurdi, the CP called on politicians to conduct themselves in a manner devoid of violence.
CP Nwadiogbu further enjoined party leaders and candidates to restrain their supporters and ensure peaceful and responsible conduct during political activities.
He assured political parties and candidates that the Police would remain professional and impartial, while providing adequate security for lawful campaigns, rallies and other political events.
The police boss said the peace accord was aimed at promoting peaceful political activities and sustaining security across the state.
“The CP particularly warned against the recruitment or use of political thugs, cult groups and other criminal elements to intimidate opponents or disrupt lawful political activities.
“The Peace Accord was subsequently signed by participating political parties and candidates, signifying their collective commitment to reject political violence, respect the rights of other political actors and cooperate with security agencies in maintaining peace throughout the electoral process.
“The Commissioner assured all political parties and candidates that the Police Command would remain professional, impartial and committed to providing adequate security for all lawful political activities.
“He further urged stakeholders to maintain effective communication with the Police and other security agencies, especially with respect to planned rallies, campaigns and other major political activities.
“The Command therefore calls on all political leaders, candidates, supporters and the general public to uphold the spirit of the Peace Accord and work collectively towards peaceful and credible political activities in Benue State.” The statement read.
The PPRO said the stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful campaigns, respect for the rule of law, and the protection of lives and property throughout the electoral period
Under the accord, the participating parties pledged to reject political violence, respect the rights of rival political actors and cooperate with security agencies to maintain peace.
