Alleged $7.2 Billion Fraud:  Ex-NNPCL GCEO, Mele Kyari Surrenders To EFCC

The immediate past  Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, Mele Kyari, on Wednesday, went to the office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Abuja after being placed on wanted list.

The EFCC had few months ago placed Kyari on its watch list over an ongoing probe into the $7.2 billion refineries’ turnaround maintenance.

The former NNPCL boss who was summoned by the anti draft agency for questionings on financial and technical matters during his administration as GCEO, arrived EFCC’s headquarters in Abuja at about 2:15pm.

A top source at the commission  confirmed that Kyari was still being grilled by a special team of investigators as the time of filing this report by 7:20 pm.

“He came in early today, and he is facing our investigators. I am not sure whether he would be asked to go today.” The source said 

The source said that the interrogators are focusing on the contracts awarded by the NNPCL under him, the huge amount of money spent on the refineries which are still not producing among others.

The source added that the commission is interacting with the former m managing directors of the three refineries and all contractors.

Kyari’s questioning comes weeks after a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the freezing of all bank accounts linked to him, following an EFCC application.

He went to EFCC after the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered a temporary freezing of four bank accounts said to be connected to him over allegations of fraud.
