Normalcy has returned to the Onitsha Main Market, the commercial hub of Anambra state after the reported shooting of four people on Tuesday by the operatives of OCHA Brigade, an environmental enforcement outfit of Anambra state government.
Our Correspondent who visited the market early hours of Wednesday witnessed the usual bustling of business activities by the traders.
Mr Ifeanyi Okija, a trader said the incident was regrettable, but business must continue.
He urged the state government and law enforcement agencies to ensure culprits were brought to book to avoid future occurrences.
The OCHA Brigade allegedly opened fire at the bustling Onitsha Main Market, Emeka Offor Plaza axis, leaving four people, including a pregnant woman dead.
Chief Law Mefor, Commissioner for Information, said that the erring officers had been handed over to the police.
state government was aware of the disturbance at the market and
appreciated the swift intervention of the Police, who have restored calm and order to the area.
He said that investigation into the incident has commenced, and the government will ensure that all necessary measures are taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
“Regrettably, one of the victims, Miss Chinwe Igwe, was confirmed dead on arrival. Her body has been deposited at the hospital morgue for autopsy and preservation. The other victims are currently receiving treatment and are responding positively.
“Meanwhile, Mr Governor has directed that the suspects be arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution and for the medical needs of those who sustained injuries to be taken care of.
“Meanwhile normalcy has since been restored in the area by the Police, while patrols and monitoring by law enforcement agents continue to ensure sustained peace,” Mefor stated.
Meanwhile, the state police command has invited the management of the Ocha Brigade to assist in identifying those responsible for the shooting so they can face prosecution.
Authorities assured the public that peace has been restored in the market, with patrols and monitoring ongoing to maintain order.
