Gunmen suspected to be bandits have killed three members of a local vigilante group after they launched an unprovoked attack on a civilian guard post in the Gwa Rim community, Riyom Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State.
It was gathered that several vigilantes have lost their lives while trying to provide security assistance to their communities.
Confirming the latest incident, residents said the attack occurred at about 2 a.m. on Wednesday when the gunmen opened fire on the vigilantes who were keeping watch at the community guard post.
A member of the area, Damba Dang, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent, said the attackers invaded the area while the community was asleep, killing three vigilantes.
He decried the renewed attacks on communities in the area, adding that residents were becoming increasingly worried over their safety.
Dang noted that the killing of the vigilantes was particularly disturbing because they were only providing security for their community and helping to protect residents against attacks.
“We beg the security agencies to urgently strengthen security around Gwa Rim and other vulnerable communities in Riyom to prevent further attacks.
“We also appeal to security operatives to investigate the incident, track down the perpetrators and ensure that those responsible for the killings are brought to justice.”
