The Nigeria Democratic Congress has named Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, son of former Kano State governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as its deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Kano State.
The development was confirmed on Monday by Ibrahim Shuaibu, spokesperson to the party’s governorship candidate, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
According to Shuaibu, the decision followed consultations with party leaders and stakeholders as part of efforts to strengthen the party’s electoral prospects ahead of the 2027 governorship contest.
“The governorship candidate of our great party, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has selected Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election in Kano State,” he said.
He added that the choice reflects the party’s commitment to unity, inclusiveness and broad-based representation across the state.
Shuaibu described Mustapha Kwankwaso as a loyal party member whose nomination is expected to deepen support for the NDC and reinforce its grassroots structure.
The selection is also seen as a significant boost to the influence of the Kwankwasiyya Movement within the party as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gather momentum.
Gwarzo, a former Deputy Governor of Kano State, emerged as the NDC governorship candidate following consultations among party stakeholders.
Political observers believe the pairing of Gwarzo and Mustapha Kwankwaso could shape emerging alliances and influence the dynamics of the 2027 governorship race in Kano State.
