The Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 Presidential election, Mr Peter Obi and a former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, have joined the National Democratic Congress.

Obi a former Governor of Anambra State and Kwankwaso who was the Presidential Candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, were admitted into the party during a meeting in Abuja.
The meeting held at the Abuja residence of the National Leader of the NDC, Senator Seriake Dickson, a former Governor of Bayelsa State who represents Bayelsa West in the Senate.
While Obi announced his retirement from the African Democratic Congress on Sunday, Kwankwaso had earlier resigned from the NNPP on March 29, 2026.
Both politicians were received into the NDC by the Party’s National leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson and National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas.
Obi said after the getting that that the defection was to form a new coalition to “defend, restore and sustain democracy” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He explained that his decision to defect to the the NDC was in response to the alleged move by the ruling APC to prevent him from appearing on the ballot in 2027 as a Presidential Candidate.
He explained further that he, Kwankwaso and others left the ADC because the system that got them out of the LP and NNPP had made its way into the party thereby causing division and
“We left ADC because the system that made us to leave LP and NNPP has found its way into the ADC leading to intensive litigations and other crises,” he said.
The former Anambra governor accused the ruling party of sabotaging earlier attempts by opposition figures to build a united platform to challenge the Tinubu administration.
“Few years ago, we set out together to provide a platform to rescue, restore and sustain prosperity and democracy from the Bola Tinubu’s led APC government. Our individual and joint effort has been sabotaged. Every effort has been made to truncate our mission,” Obi stated.
