Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari was buried on Tuesday in Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic funeral rites.
The event drew dignitaries, military leaders, and mourners from across the country.
The late statesman, who died in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness, was laid to rest in a solemn ceremony at his private residence.
His remains arrived in Katsina aboard a Nigerian Air Force aircraft, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima and other top government officials.
The body was transported from the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport to Daura via helicopter.
Along the route, thousands of residents stood in silent tribute, lining the streets to pay their last respects to the former president.
At 5:50 p.m., the Chief Imam of Katsina led the funeral prayers, after which Buhari was interred in accordance with Islamic customs.
Army Generals and Service Chiefs carried his body to the graveside, where a 21-gun salute was fired in his honour—a symbolic gesture recognising his service as both military Head of State and civilian President.
Attendance at the burial was limited to family members, close associates, and a select group of Islamic clerics, in keeping with the late president’s expressed wishes for a modest final rite.
