The Federal High Court in Abuja presided over by Justice Musa Liman, on Thursday, granted bail to activist Omoyele Sowere in the sum of N10million, with one surety in like sum.
According to the court, the surety must be a responsible individual with landed property of equal value and is required to submit the original documents of the property along with a passport photograph to the court registrar.
Ruling on Sowore’s bail application, Liman also ordered Sowore to deposit his international passport with the court.
Liman gave Sowere 24 hours to meet the bail conditions or be remanded in police custody.
Sowore’s counsel had urged the court to grant bail under lenient terms, while the prosecution requested stringent terms to ensure his appearance at trial.
The court had on Wednesday adjourned ruling to Thursday on Sowere’s bail application, following arguments from his counsel, Marshall Abubakar, and prosecution counsel, Udey Jonathan.
Sowore faces 17 counts of cybercrime charges brought by the Nigeria Police Force.
He had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The charges border on an alleged tweet by Sowore in which he referred to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as the “illegal IGP.”
The police are claiming that the statement was false and intended to incite public disorder.
