Court  fix February 3 arraignment of Ex-NHIS ES, Yusuf

A Federal Capital Territory(FCT) High Court sitting in Kuchiako, Kuje Abuja, presided over by Justice Chinyere E. Nwecheonwu has fixed Monday, February 3, 2025, as date for the arraignment of ex- Executive Secretary of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Professor Usman Yusuf.

Prof. Yusuf was brought to the court on Thursday by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission(EFCC) to be arraigned but the presiding judge, later deferred the arraignment to February 3rd, 2025.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had on Wednesday at  about 4:30pm, raided Yusuf’s residence and apprehended him following his alleged involvement in N919 million fraud.

He was brought before the court for arraignment on Thursday.

However, the EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale in a statement on Thursday in Abuja, said the arraignment was shifted to February 3rd, 2025 to allow for amendment of the charges.

Though defence counsel, Isah Dokto Haruna, who held brief for the lead defence counsel, O.I.Habeeb, SAN, made an application for bail 

But Justice  Nwecheonwu, however turned down  application on account of the defendant’s deferred arraignment.

He consequently adjourned the matter to February 3, 2025, for arraignment and ruled that the defendant be remanded in the custody of the Commission.

Professor Yusuf was arrested by EFCC operatives who raided his residence on Wednesday.

The Federal Ministry of Health had  in 2019 petitioned the immediate past presidency under former President Muhammadu Buhari against Prof. Yusuf over misconduct and fraudulent practices.

He was relieved of his appointment in 2019 by the former President Muhammadu Buhari seven months after he was recommended for dismissal by a fact-finding panel set up by the Federal Ministry of Health over alleged mismanagement of N919m
