The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information and prominent military spokesman, who died while in captivity of terrorists.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) described the late senior officer as a distinguished soldier whose service to the nation left an enduring legacy.
The military said Abubakar served in several strategic positions during his career, including as spokesperson for various military formations and later as Director of Defence Information, where he played a key role in shaping public communication for the Armed Forces.
According to the statement, the late general made significant contributions to counter-insurgency operations, military professionalism, and national security, earning the respect of colleagues and the wider defence community.
The Defence Headquarters disclosed that it deliberately refrained from making public comments about his abduction while efforts were ongoing to secure his release, noting that security agencies deployed substantial operational resources in the rescue mission.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria extend their deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and all Nigerians over this painful loss. Major General Abubakar’s dedication to duty, patriotism, and commitment to national unity remain worthy examples for serving personnel,” the statement said.
The military noted that the tragic incident has further strengthened its determination to confront terrorism, kidnapping, and other violent crimes across the country.
It reiterated its commitment to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and protecting citizens, assuring Nigerians that ongoing military operations against terrorist and criminal networks would be intensified.
The Defence Headquarters pledged that those responsible for acts of terrorism and abductions would be pursued and brought to justice, stressing that the Armed Forces would remain steadfast in restoring peace and security across the country.
