The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Rivers State, Blessing Fubara, has dismissed claims that his political ambition is being driven by powerful backers, insisting that he has no political godfather.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Friday, Fubara said his aspiration was based on personal conviction and a clear vision for the state rather than external influence.
“I don’t have a godfather but I have God the father. You would also agree with me that if my ambition is determined by the grounds you are mentioning, it would mean I have no clear vision or focus for what I am working toward,” he said.
Fubara also denied insinuations that his candidacy was an extension of the political interests of his brother, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, stressing that both men hold different political views and ideologies.
“My brother, Nigerians, and indeed the wider world saw what happened between him and his party. We have different political ideologies and individual perspectives,” he stated.
He added that despite the various narratives surrounding the political situation in Rivers State, his focus remained on his campaign objectives.
“It’s a trying moment for us in Rivers State and there are all sorts of narratives. They come with different narratives and try to set up a perspective for the people to run with but we are focused with our eyes on the ball that the soul of Rivers State must be rescued,” he said.
Blessing Fubara formally entered the 2027 governorship race in May after obtaining the Nigeria Democratic Congress expression of interest and nomination forms.
His emergence comes amid continuing political realignments in Rivers State following the prolonged crisis that reshaped the state’s political landscape and triggered a series of party defections ahead of the 2027 elections.
