By Joy Yesufu

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect.

His resignation was formally communicated to President Bola Tinubu in a letter dated December 1, in which the minister explained that he was stepping down on health grounds.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development in a statement on Monday night.

According to him, President Tinubu has acknowledged and accepted the minister’s decision to leave the cabinet.

He added that Tinubu will likely inform the Senate of Badaru’s successor later this week.

Badaru Abubakar, 63, was a two-term governor of Jigawa state from 2015 to 2023. He was appointed as a minister on August 21,  2023, by President Tinubu.

His resignation comes amid President Tinubu’s declaration of a national security emergency, with plans to elaborate on its scope in due course.
