The Department of State Services (DSS) has given human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, a one-week ultimatum to delete a social media post it described as “false, malicious, and inciting” against President Bola Tinubu.
In a letter dated September 7, the DSS alleged that Sowore’s post on X (formerly Twitter) on August 26 contained derogatory remarks capable of undermining national security and public order.
Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), had in the post referred to President Tinubu as a “criminal” and accused him of deceiving Nigerians after the President reportedly claimed that corruption no longer existed under his administration.
The DSS, through its Director of Legal Services, Uwem Davies, warned that Sowore’s remarks had sparked anger among citizens and could “incite public disturbance, disunity, and even insurrection.”
The agency cautioned that failure to delete the post within the given timeframe would leave it with no option but to take “all lawful measures” to safeguard the country’s stability.
