The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday at the age of 82.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The declaration is part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning period announced by the Presidency to commemorate Buhari’s life and contributions to national development.
Buhari passed away at a London clinic. His death was confirmed in a statement released by his former Special Adviser, Garba Shehu, on Sunday evening.
According to a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the minister described Buhari as a statesman who served Nigeria with “dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to unity and progress.”
The holiday, the government said, is intended to give Nigerians the opportunity to reflect on the late President’s leadership and his role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic journey.
“In furtherance of the seven days of national mourning declared by President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late President Muhammadu Buhari,” the statement read.
The minister also urged the citizens to use the occasion to promote peace, unity, and patriotism, which he said reflect the values that Buhari championed throughout his public service career.
As part of the national mourning, flags are to be flown at half-mast from Sunday, July 13, to Saturday, July 19, 2025.
The Federal Government extended its condolences to the family of the late president, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
