FG Files 13-Count Charge Against Alleged Coup Plotters, Arraigns Military, Police Officers

By Joy Yesufu

The Federal Government has filed a 13-count charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja against several individuals accused of plotting to overthrow the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Those listed in the charge include a retired Major-General, a retired naval captain, a serving police inspector, and three other suspects.

The charges follow the conclusion of investigations by Nigerian security agencies into what authorities described as an alleged conspiracy to stage a violent coup.

Sources familiar with the investigation said about 40 suspects were initially identified in connection with the plot.

According to the findings, 16 military officers were arrested for alleged direct involvement, while two civilians were reportedly engaged in reconnaissance activities.

Two other individuals were said to have been recruited to incite civil unrest as a pretext for the planned takeover, while five others were linked to suspected funding channels.

Details of the charges and the identities of the defendants were, however, yet to be fully disclosed as of press time.

The case is expected to test Nigeria’s legal and security frameworks in addressing threats to constitutional order, amid heightened concerns over national stability.
