No fewer than five people lost their lives when a canoe they were travelling with capsized in Gantsa town, Buji Local Government Area of Jigawa state.
It was learnt that the canoe carrying the victims on Tuesday attempted to cross a road submerged by floodwaters.
DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, Spokesman of the state police command confirmed the incident.
He said the canoe capsized, leading to the drowning of all occupants.
“Emergency responders, including local divers and police officers, arrived at the scene promptly but were unable to save the victims.
“The deceased were transported to Gantsa Cottage Hospital, where they were pronounced dead by the medical staff”, Lawan said.
The victims, identified as Lurwanu Adamu, Idris Abubakar, Fiddausi Dahiru, Ramla Nura, and Usman Adamu, were from Malamawar Gangare, Birnin Kudu LGA.
Their bodies have been returned to their families for burial.
