Flood Displaces Shehu Of Borno From Palace

By Tom Zaneni, Abuja

Flood has sacked the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Garbai Elkanemi from his palace in Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno State.

The Network gathered that the palace of the Elkanemi was submerged by floodwaters in the early hours of Tuesday.

Residents said he had already evacuated to the Government House where he is taking refuge.

They expressed surprise at the high level of flooding, saying it was unprecedented.

“This is shocking! I have never witnessed this before”, a resident of Kofar Shehu said.

“Even the Shehu has left his palace to the Government House”, the resident added.

Some of the worst-hit areas around Maiduguri city are Lagos Street, Modugari, Post Office, and Gwange.

The natural disaster has left many residents stranded and they are struggling to rescue their property, and avoid deaths.

One of the victims, Usman Babagana, said there were early warnings that more floodwaters may spread within neighbourhoods.

But the residents however stayed put as they had no alternative shelters.

“We were told flood is coming. I never expected it this way. We didn’t take it much seriously because we had nowhere to go”, he said.
