Four people have died in a fatal road crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Straight Gate School, Ipara Remo, in Ogun State.
The accident occurred at about 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday and involved a blue Mitsubishi Canter with registration number FGE 753 XA and an ash-coloured HOWO truck with registration number T-695 KT.
The Federal Road Safety Corps said eight people were involved in the crash, with four male adults killed, one male adult injured and three others escaping unhurt.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the FRSC, Chief Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, disclosed the details in a statement on Wednesday.
Odunsi said preliminary findings identified speeding and wrongful overtaking as the immediate causes of the crash, while driver fatigue also contributed to the incident.
“The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, confirmed a fatal road traffic crash that occurred at about 0400hrs on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, along the Ibadan–Lagos route at Straight Gate.
“A total of eight (8) persons were involved in the crash. Four (4) persons, all male adults, were killed, while one (1) male adult sustained injuries and three (3) persons were unhurt.”
He said the Mitsubishi driver was travelling at high speed when the vehicle rammed into the moving HOWO truck while attempting to overtake.
“Two vehicles were involved in the crash: Mitsubishi Cabstar, blue in colour, registration number FGE 753 XA. HOWO Truck, ash in colour, registration number T-695 KT.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the crash was caused by speed violation (SPV) and wrong overtaking (WOV). The Mitsubishi driver, reportedly travelling at high speed, rammed into the moving truck while attempting to overtake. Fatigue was also identified as a contributing factor, as the driver was reportedly fatigued during the journey.”
The FRSC rescue team received the distress report at 4:33 a.m. and arrived at the scene six minutes later, at 4:39 a.m.
The injured victim was taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the FOS Mortuary, Ipara. The damaged vehicles were handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division, Isara Division, for further investigation.
The Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists to avoid speeding, driver fatigue and dangerous overtaking, particularly during early-morning and long-distance journeys.
