Gunmen have killed the President General of Umucheke Okwe, Onuimo Local Government Area of the state, Hyginus Ohazuruike, and seven other community leaders.
Ohazuruike was murdered alongside the seven community leaders while holding a meeting in his shop on Saturday evening.
The Spokesman of the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye confirmed the latest killing in the state to journalists on Sunday.
The PPRO alleged that the dastardly act was carried out by gunmen suspected to be from the South East Separatist Group, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
The police said that those who carried out the crime would be tracked down and arrested.
He said that the Commissioner of Police, Commenders of the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, and government officials have visited Onuimo as a result of the killing.
“Today, 04/8/2024, the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma together with the Sole Administrator of Onuimo LGA Dr. Emeka Obi, representative of the Commander 34 Artillery Brigade, Major AI Maikarifi, Commandant NSCDC, Comdt. Mathew Ovye and other security agencies visited Umucheke Community in Onuimo LGA for an on-the-spot assessment of the tragic incident that claimed the lives of over 8 members of Eze Umucheke Cabinet yesterday who were gruesomely murdered by hoodlums suspected to be members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN.
“CP Aboki Danjuma commiserated with the families of the bereaved and the entire community members over the unfortunate death of their loved ones and assured them that security agencies in the State are working in synergy to apprehend the miscreants responsible for the dastardly act and make them face the full wrath of the law,” he said.
