Suspected gunmen on Monday night launched a deadly attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos, Plateau State, killing three security operatives in what appeared to be an attempt to breach the country’s foremost policy and leadership training institution.
Sources said the attackers stormed the facility at about 11:40 p.m., opening fire on security personnel and triggering a fierce gun battle.
A staff member of the institute, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the assailants attacked unexpectedly but were met with stiff resistance from security operatives guarding the premises.
According to the source, the attackers partially damaged the institute’s perimeter fence and attempted to gain access to the facility before security forces engaged them.
“The gunmen came between midnight and 1 a.m. They broke part of the institute’s fence and opened fire on security personnel on duty. Two soldiers and one police officer attached to the institute were killed before the attackers fled,” the source said.
Residents of nearby Kuru community in Jos South Local Government Area reported hearing prolonged gunfire, which caused panic among residents and forced many to remain indoors throughout the night.
In an official statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs Department of the institute, Dr. Osime Samuel, NIPSS confirmed the incident, noting that the situation was swiftly brought under control through the coordinated response of security personnel and relevant security agencies.
“The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies.
There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents or facilities of the institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled,” the statement said.
The institute added that investigations into the incident were ongoing and cautioned against speculation regarding the motive behind the attack.
NIPSS also reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of its participants, staff and residents, while commending the courage and sacrifice of the security personnel who prevented the attackers from penetrating the facility.
