From Attah Ede, Makurdi
Youths suspected to be thugs on Tuesday attacked the convoy of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, after he arrived in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
The incident occurred shortly after Obi and his entourage arrived in Makurdi and were heading to Yelwata Community in Guma Local Government Area to sympathise with victims of the Fulani herdsmen attack.
The suspected thugs barricaded Gboko Road near the Air Force Base, allegedly attempting to block the presidential candidate from gaining access into the state.
They were seen running after vehicles in the convoy, telling Obi and his entourage to go back to wherever they came from, saying they were not needed in the state.
When the situation became tense and there was no security presence to control the youths, Obi and his entourage made a U-turn and headed back to the airport.
The former Anambra State governor has since left the state.
As of the time of filing this report, the Benue State Government and the police had yet to publicly react to the incident.
