The management of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) Kano, Kano, has shut down two privately owned female hostels as a result of alleged immoral activities.
The affected hostels are Al-Ansar Indabo hostel located at UDB Road and Hotoro, both located within walking distance of the school. The university had previously approved them as off-campus accommodation.
The Vice President of Campus Life, Dr. Hamza Garba, in a statement on Tuesday, said the decision to close down the to hostels was hinged on reports of immoral conduct, inadequate water and electricity supply, student violence, and unauthorized late-night movements.
“I am directed by the management to write, inform, and bring to the attention of our esteemed parents and students that the university has withdrawn its approval for Al-Ansar Indabo female students hostels located at UDB Road and Hotoro.
‘Students have been directed to vacate immediately after the fall semester exams.
“The University also warned it would not be liable for any consequences from non-compliance and is working with security agencies to enforce the directive”, he said
The hostels reportedly accommodate about 500 female students, many of them from outside Kano.
Some students confirmed that plans are underway to relocate them to newly built hostels closer to campus, one of which is named after a late student.
Our correspondent gathered that MAAUN is yet to have on-campus hostels and only relies on partnerships with private developers for student housing.
