Ahead of the July 12 local government elections in Lagos State, the state police command has announced a comprehensive restriction on vehicular movement across the state from 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on election day.
In a statement released on Wednesday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the movement restriction will apply to all roads and waterways within Lagos during the designated hours.
The police also announced a ban on armed escorts and security aides accompanying their principals to polling units and collation centres, describing the move as necessary to prevent intimidation and ensure a peaceful electoral process.
“The use of police escorts and armed security aides at polling units or collation centres is strictly prohibited.
“This measure aims to prevent any undue influence and safeguard the integrity of the election, ”the statement read.
In addition, the command warned against the use of sirens and covered number plates, especially around voting and collation centres, stressing that only vehicles assigned to essential services—such as ambulances would be allowed movement during the restriction period.
The command, however, noted that accredited election observers and journalists granted clearance by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) are exempted from the movement ban.
The police urged residents to cooperate fully with law enforcement authorities and adhere to all directives to ensure a safe and credible electoral exercise.
