Nasarawa Assembly Adopts State Police, Advances Financial Management Bill

By Attah Ede

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has adopted the proposed establishment of State Police Services, approving the Sixth Alteration Bill, 2026, forwarded to it by the National Assembly for consideration.

The Speaker of the House, Danladi Jatau, announced the approval during Tuesday’s plenary in Lafia.

He subsequently mandated the Clerk of the House to communicate the Assembly’s resolution to the National Assembly for further necessary action.

Jatau explained that the proposed legislation seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to provide a legal framework for the establishment of State Police Services while retaining the Nigeria Police Force at the federal level.

“We have endorsed the Sixth Alteration Bill, 2026, seeking to provide a constitutional framework for establishing State Police Services,” the Speaker said.

He commended members of the Assembly for their consultations with relevant stakeholders, expressing optimism that the proposed state police system would complement the federal police in tackling insecurity and promoting peace across the country.

In a related development, the Assembly has passed into second reading a bill seeking to amend the Nasarawa State House of Assembly Financial Management Law, 2021, and for other related matters.

The Speaker announced the passage of the bill after its sponsor, Daniel Oga Ogazi, presented its substance during plenary.

Ogazi intimated that the proposed amendment was necessary to address prevailing operational realities and provide appropriate financial guidelines for the effective administration and smooth running of the legislature.

Contributing to the debate, Suleiman Yakubu Azara and Hudu A. Hudu supported the bill.

They both highlighted the need for improved financial management within the Assembly.

The motion for the bill to scale second reading was moved by Ogazi and seconded by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Muhammad Adamu Oyanki.

The bill subsequently received unanimous support from members.

Following its passage, Speaker Jatau referred the bill to the House Committee on Rules and Business, chaired by Oyanki, directing the committee to examine the proposed legislation and report back to the House on Monday, October 26, 2026
