A fatal road accident has claimed 22 lives near Tufa village along Lambata-Lapai road in Gurara local government area of Niger state.
The accident, according to eyewitness account, occurred at about 3:30 am on Tuesday when Nigeria’s First Lady visited the State to commiserate with them on the ravaging banditry attacks and natural disasters.
The Niger State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Aisha Saadu, confirmed the incident describing it as unfortunate.
She said the accident happened when a heavily loaded lorry transporting passengers and goods from Kano to Lagos lost control and veered off the road.
Saadu stated that the vehicle was carrying 42 males and cago when the accident occurred.
The Sector Commander also listed other possible causes of the tragedy to overloading and poor travel conditions.
The Sector commander noted that , ” 22 individuals were confirmed dead on the spot, while the 20 injured were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Lambatta”
Villagers who rushed to the scene of the accident said the tragedy occurred due to overspeeding.
