Nigeria Eyes Stronger Hungary Partnership As FG Congratulates New Prime Minister Péter Magyar

Nigeria has expressed optimism for deeper diplomatic and economic cooperation with Hungary following the inauguration of Péter Magyar as the country’s new Prime Minister.

The Federal Government, in a statement issued on Sunday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said it looked forward to expanding bilateral engagement with Hungary in areas such as education, agriculture, trade, energy, science and technology, as well as capacity development.

The statement, signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, quoted Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to working closely with the new Hungarian administration through sustained diplomatic dialogue and multilateral cooperation.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu also expressed confidence that relations between both countries would continue to grow under Magyar’s leadership, particularly as Hungary advances its democratic and economic priorities within Europe.

“The government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria wish Prime Minister Péter Magyar and the Government of Hungary success in their new responsibilities and express hope for continued peace, stability, and prosperity for the people of Hungary,” the statement read.

Magyar was sworn in as Hungary’s Prime Minister on May 9, 2026, during a ceremony held at the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest after his Tisza Party secured victory in the parliamentary elections conducted on April 12.

While congratulating the new Prime Minister and his party, the Nigerian government described the political transition in Hungary as a reflection of democratic growth and constitutional order.

“Nigeria notes that this political transition represents a significant moment in Hungary’s democratic evolution and reflects the enduring importance of democratic participation, constitutional governance, and peaceful political transition in strengthening national institutions and public trust,” the statement added.

The Federal Government further noted that Nigeria and Hungary have sustained cordial diplomatic relations over the years based on mutual respect and constructive engagement.

It also highlighted Hungary’s scholarship and educational exchange programmes, which Nigeria said have contributed significantly to strengthening ties and people-to-people relations between both countries.
