The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Anambra state branch has confirmed the release of Dr Edwin Emegakor, the Medical Director of Crown Multi-Specialist Hospital Nkpor in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state, who was abducted on May 7.
Dr Princeton Okam, Chairman of NMA in the state confirmed Emegakor’s freedom in Awka on Sunday just when he was about to address journalists on the strike action planned to commence on Monday.
Emegakor was abducted in the evening of May 7 after attending to a patient in his hospital by unidentified gunmen allegedly clad in security agencies’ uniforms.
Okam who expressed gratitude to God said Emegakor was released with the help of police operatives.
He said the rescued colleague was healthy, in good spirits and already reunited with his family .
He said the release of the doctor had overtaken the strike action scheduled to commence on Monday and that there would be an Emergency General Meeting to take decisions on the call-off.
He appreciated those who played roles in the rescue of Emegakor while calling on the government of Anambra to ensure protection of life and property in the state.
Recall that the NMA threatened to withdraw services in Anambra if Emekagor was not released within 48 hours.
