The Nigeria Police Force has released details of the funeral arrangements for former Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Solomon Ehigiator Arase, who passed away on August 31, 2025, at the age of 69.
Arase, the country’s 18th indigenous Inspector-General, was renowned for his commitment to police reforms, philanthropy, and exemplary leadership both in and out of service.
He was appointed IGP in April 2015 and served until June 2016.
According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the ceremonies will commence in Abuja on September 24 with a Day of Tribute at the Nigeria Police Resource Centre, Jabi.
A requiem mass will be held on September 26 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, followed by a lying-in-state on September 27 at his Abuja residence before the body is moved to Benin City, Edo State.
In Sabongida-Ora, his hometown, a candlelight procession will take place on September 29. On October 2, the Edo State Judiciary and the Nigerian Bar Association will hold a valedictory court session at the Edo State High Court, Benin City.
The same day, a service of songs and a family lying-in-state will be held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Airport Road.
The funeral mass is scheduled for October 3 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, after which the late IGP will be laid to rest at his private residence in Benin City.
A reception will follow at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub. The rites will conclude with a thanksgiving mass on October 5.
Dr. Arase, who held a PhD in law and was a recipient of the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), died at Cedarcrest Hospital, Abuja, after a brief illness.
