NIS Slams Officer With Suspension For Requesting Financial Gratification

By Tom Zaneni, Abuja

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended indefinitely an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II for allegedly seeking gratification from a traveller.

The Comptroller-General of NIS, Kemi Nandap, disclosed this in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Udo, on Thursday, in Abuja.

Nadap said the officer’s alleged conduct was captured in a video circulating on social media, describing it as “disgraceful”.

She said the officer’s behaviour did not reflect the values and ethics of professionalism guiding operations at the NIS.

Nandap condemned the misconduct in the strongest terms, stressing that it negated the current reforms at the NIS designed to enhance service standards.

She said the officer had been placed on indefinite suspension pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures in line with law and public service rules.

Nandap explained that the NIS got a video being circulated on social media captioned, “This is how immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria”, showing one of its officers asking for financial gratification from a traveller.

“This disgraceful act is not a representation of our commitment to hospitality, reception and courtesy.

“As a result, the officer in question has been indefinitely suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures”,she said.

She added that the NIS was committed to weeding out corrupt elements within the service to uphold its zero-tolerance for corruption policy.

In the video, the immigration officer, Okpravero C. Ufuoma was seen demanding money at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos
