NSIB Confirms Six Injured in Abuja–Kaduna Train Derailment

By Joy Yesufu

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed that six passengers sustained injuries after a Kaduna-bound train derailed on Tuesday morning along the Abuja–Kaduna corridor.

The incident occurred at about 11:09 a.m. at kilometre 49, between Kubwa and Asham stations, throwing passengers into panic as several cabins veered off the tracks.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with commuters scrambling to safety.

No fatalities were reported.

In a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, the NSIB said a “go-team” of investigators has been dispatched to the accident site to collect evidence, engage stakeholders, and commence a full inquiry.

“Current information available indicates that six persons sustained injuries, with no recorded fatalities. A go-team has been deployed to gather evidence, engage relevant stakeholders, and investigate the circumstances surrounding the derailment. The Bureau sympathises with those injured and extends support to all passengers affected,” the statement read.

Director-General of NSIB, Capt. Alex Badeh, assured Nigerians of a transparent and independent probe. “We deeply sympathise with all who sustained injuries. The Bureau has deployed investigators to the site to ensure the root cause of this derailment is uncovered. Our commitment is to ensure safer rail transport through independent safety recommendations.”

The derailment occurred shortly after the train departed Abuja for Kaduna, a route that has become one of the busiest in the country.

NSIB said updates will be provided as investigations progress.
