A large crowd of agitated women have besieged major streets in Oshogbo to protest pre election violence, alleged police intimidation, and harassment, ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in the state.
The protesting women carried placards demanding a stop to violence and politically motivated killings in the state.
The women who insisting on free fair and credible elections stressed that every voter in the state should be able to go to the polling unit to vote and return home in safety without molestation.
Some of the inscriptions on their placards read, “Stop Electoral Violence,” “We Want Ballots, Not Bullets,” “Election Is Not War,” “Vote, Don’t Fight,” and “Stop the Killings in Osun.
The protesting women called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in what they described as ann alarming threat to life and property in the state.
A woman who identified herself simply Eniola urged politicians and their supporters to stop the mindless killings and destruction in the state.
She said that people should not be intimidated and killed because of political differences.
The protesting women also demanded the redeployment of the Osun State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, for perceived partisanship.
The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Sunday announced the redeployment of the state police commissioner.
The women appealed to the police and other security agencies to be impartial in carrying out their sensitive responsibilities and ensure protection of all citizens, candidates and supporters irrespective of political affiliations.
They called on the police authorities to investigate all reported cases of violence and unlawful conducts and initiate appropriate legal actions against those found wanting.
