Police officers on Tuesday fired tear gas to disperse residents, journalists and political figures gathered at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos for a memorial marking the October 2020 #EndSARS protests.
Among those affected were the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate, Funso Doherty.
The memorial, organised by the Enough is Enough movement, was held in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the #EndSARS protests against police brutality in October 2020.
The ceremony was disrupted before participants could lay wreaths at the tollgate, as police officers deployed to the venue fired tear gas canisters to disperse the gathering.
Footage shared by TheCable showed participants scrambling for safety as tear gas spread across the area.
The incident forced the suspension of the planned wreath-laying ceremony.
Further details, including the police’s explanation for the action and whether anyone was injured or arrested, were not immediately available.
