The House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on the State of Emergency in Rivers State has summoned the state’s Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.), to appear for an interactive session on Thursday, April 17, 2025.
This was disclosed in a statement on Wednesday by the House Spokesman, Hon. Akin Rotimi (Jnr), following the committee’s inaugural meeting.
The 21-member committee, chaired by the House Leader, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, was inaugurated on Tuesday, April 15, by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen.
The committee was established in line with the National Assembly’s resolution endorsing President Bola Tinubu’s proclamation of a State of Emergency in Rivers State.
According to Rotimi, the interactive session is aimed at assessing the current situation in the state and ensuring proper legislative oversight in line with Section 11(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
“Pursuant to its constitutional mandate, the Committee resolved, among other matters, to invite Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.), the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, to appear for a comprehensive interactive session,” the statement read.
The session is scheduled to hold at 4:00 PM on Thursday, in Room 414 of the House of Representatives New Building at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.
Prof. Ihonvbere emphasized the importance of the engagement, stating, “This meeting is necessary to ascertain the true state of affairs in Rivers State and to ensure that the House is properly guided in discharging its oversight responsibilities in the public interest.”
Rotimi confirmed that a formal letter of invitation has been issued and acknowledged.
He noted that the public announcement is part of the committee’s commitment to transparency in its proceedings.
The statement added that the committee will continue its work with diligence, transparency, and strict adherence to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
