The Senate has constituted a 12-member committee to work with the House of Representatives on the Electoral Amendment Act, a development that comes amid growing public debate over the proposed changes.
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, announced the composition of the committee on Tuesday during an emergency plenary session convened to address the matter.
The joint committee is expected to harmonise contentious provisions in the amendment bill and engage with the House of Representatives to ensure legislative alignment.
Among those appointed to the committee are Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Senator Tahir Monguno, alongside other ranking lawmakers drawn from key committees of the upper chamber.
The Electoral Amendment Act has generated widespread reactions from political stakeholders and civil society groups, who have expressed concerns over its potential implications for Nigeria’s democratic process.
