Former President Goodluck Jonathan has been adopted as the presidential candidate of a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the 2027 general election.
The endorsement was announced on Saturday during a special national convention organised by the Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the PDP at its national secretariat in Area 10, Garki, Abuja.
The party’s factions announcement was contained in a communiqué issued after its Special National Convention and signed by the Interim National Working Committee’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong.
Although Jonathan was absent from the convention, party members proceeded with the ratification of his nomination, formally presenting him as the faction’s standard-bearer for the next presidential election.
His Certificate of Return was received on his behalf by a member of the House of Representatives from Bayelsa State, Fred Agbedi.
The decision was unveiled before delegates and stakeholders aligned with the Turaki faction, marking a significant development within the party’s internal political landscape as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
The faction said the move followed deliberations at the convention, where members resolved to back the former president for the country’s highest office.
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president between 2010 and 2015, has yet to publicly react to the endorsement.
Further details of the convention and the implications of the nomination are expected to emerge in the coming days.
Our correspondent made attempts to speak to Mr Fred Agbedi, who represents Sagbama Ekeremor Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State but he did not pick the calls to his telephone line as of the time of filing this report.
