The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a security advisory urging American citizens to avoid non-essential visits to military and government facilities in Abuja, citing heightened global security concerns.
In the alert released on Monday, the US Embassy said all embassy staff and their families are currently restricted from visiting such facilities unless for official duties.
The warning follows unspecified international developments that have prompted increased precautionary measures around sensitive locations.
The embassy advised US nationals in Nigeria to remain vigilant, particularly in public places frequented by Westerners, expatriates, and government officials.
They were also encouraged to avoid large gatherings, vary their routines, and stay aware of emergency exits in public buildings.
“Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, the US Mission in Nigeria informs US citizens that all embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to Nigerian military sites or other government venues in Abuja at this time,” the statement read.
The embassy urged American citizens to:
Stay alert in public places;
Avoid large gatherings;
Limit unnecessary travel;
Avoid predictable routines;
Review personal security plans and be familiar with emergency exits in buildings.
“Despite the advisory, the Consular Sections of the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain fully operational.
“US citizens in Nigeria seeking further guidance are encouraged to visit the embassy’s official website for updates and assistance.”
