Kano state Police Command has confirmed the death of a widow and her five children after consuming local delicacy which was suspected to have been made from expired cassava in Karkari village, Gwarzo local government area of Kano state.
The widow, Alhakatu Abdulkarim was said to have prepared the local delicacy, Danwake, herself which she and her five children: Bashir, Firdausi, Hafsat, Usman, and Jamilu (all deceased now) ate.
A neighbour of the deceased, Garba Muhammad, said that due to the economic situation of the country, the widow who was the one catering for her five children used spoilt cassava flour to prepare the food.
The deceased, were rushed to Gwarzo general hospital in a critical condition but were all later confirmed dead.
Confirming the incident, Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna said they are still waiting for the medical report from the hospital to ascertain the cause of the death of the six persons from same family.
“The six members of the family who ate the food were rushed to Gwarzo General Hospital where they were confirmed dead by doctors” he added.
He also said though initial reports states that the food was prepared using expired cassava flour, which is suspected to have caused the deaths but the command will wait for the final report from the hospital to make their conclusion on the actual cause of their death.
