A devastating windstorm has swept through the Ukete Oduma community in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State, destroying over 80 buildings and displacing hundreds of residents.
The natural disaster, which occurred during a heavy downpour on Thursday evening, affected public schools and several churches which were reduced to rubble or left roofless.
Beyond the structural damage, the community is mourning the loss of property worth millions of Naija ra. The storm also toppled numerous electricity poles, uprooted economic trees, and killed an unspecified number of livestock.
When our reporter visited the community, the atmosphere was one of despair and confusion. Displaced families were seen frantically attempting to dry out household items and personal belongings soaked by the relentless rain.
Meanwhile, the traditional ruler of Ukete Oduma, Igwe Patrick Oshiekwe, described the incident as a “hurricane-like” event that has left his people traumatized and vulnerable to the elements.
Currently, the Igwe’s palace has been converted into a makeshift emergency shelter, providing a sleeping area for dozens of families who have nowhere else to go as the rains continue.
”Everybody in this community is battered. Since I was born, I have never witnessed such a disaster,” Igwe Oshiekwe lamented, noting that the destruction occurred within an incredibly short period.
The monarch issued an emotional appeal to Gov. Peter Ndubisi Mbah, as well as federal lawmakers Sen. Osita Ngwu and Chief Anayo Onwuegbu, urging them to intervene before the situation worsens.
Igwe Oshiekwe expressed particular concern for residents living abroad, noting that it would take time for them to return and address the damage to their properties while the rain continues to fall on open interiors.
Adding to the outcry, the President General of the Town Union, Mr Jeremiah Njoku, admitted that the sheer scale of the devastation has left the community leaders in a state of shock.
While expressing profound gratitude that no lives were lost, Mr. Njoku emphasized that the magnitude of the property damage is unprecedented in the history of the region.
Local victims, including Mr Ernest Nweze and Chief Ifeanyichukwu Akuatuegwu, shared heart-wrenching accounts of losing investments and labor of a lifetime in a single afternoon.
