A 25-year-old worker, Bakeru Iwal, has died after a building undergoing demolition collapsed in Otolo-Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The fatal incident occurred on Tuesday when part of the structure suddenly gave way, trapping the worker inside the building.
Residents and eyewitnesses in the area said the building was being demolished when a section unexpectedly collapsed, leaving Iwal trapped beneath the debris.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said police operatives responded immediately after receiving a report of the collapse.
“The Anambra State Police Command has commenced an investigation into an incident involving the demolition of an old building at Otolo-Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area, where one person reportedly died following the collapse of part of the structure.
“Upon receiving the report, police operatives attached to the Otolo Divisional Headquarters promptly responded to the scene, cordoned off the area and commenced preliminary investigations.
“The scene was also documented, while the deceased, later identified as Bakeru Iwal, a 25-year-old male, was evacuated to the mortuary for preservation, pending autopsy and other necessary examinations.
“Preliminary information indicates that the building was being demolished when a section of the structure suddenly collapsed, trapping one of the workers,” Ikenga said.
He added that the victim’s body had been deposited in a mortuary while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Ama, has directed a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the collapse and whether any individual or organisation may be held responsible.
According to the police, appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
“The Command urges members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed, while further updates will be provided as necessary,” the statement added.
The incident has renewed concerns about safety standards during building demolition and construction activities, particularly as authorities continue efforts to reduce fatalities linked to structural failures across the country.
